Placket How To

Step One: 1. Stich center back using a 1/2" seam, from the lower (hem) edge up to the point where the placket begins. Back stitch and clip straight across to within one or two threads of the stiching line. Press seam open, or if doing a french seam press to one side.

Step Two: Cut your placket piece along the salvage edge,1 1/2" wide and twice the length of the placket opening. Position placket opening of dress to form a straight line. With right sides together, raw edges even, and the placket underneath, stitch placket to dress using a 1/2" seam.

Step Three: With placket piece up determine placement of the elastic loops. Mark with pins or a water soluable marker. With small sharp scissors, make a clip in the stitching line at each marking.

Step Four: Working from inside the seam allowance, insert each loop into the clipped stich line. Pull loops through and secure with pins. The pins prevent the loops from slipping out of place.

Stitch again over the the original seam line. Zig zag the elastic loop strip in place in the seam allowance.Trim seam to 1/4"

Step Five: Fold placket piece over the seam allowance. With selvage edge of placket piece even with the stitching line, machine stitch in place or whip by hand. Press, sew on buttons. Shank buttons work best. I have found these loops work really well with novelty buttons that can be hard to get through a button hole.
