Elastic How To

Updated Elastic Application- Here is the perfect elastic application for
casual wear. Use 1"or 3/4" non-roll elastic for best results. The key to
this application is the use of the zipper foot.

1. Find the casing line on the pattern. The width of the casing should be
the width of the elastic +1/2" for the seam allowance. If 1" elastic is
used, add 1-1/2" above the casing line.

2. Complete the garment to the elastic step.

3. Fold fabric on the casing line, press. Zigzag or serge raw edge.
Edge stitch 1/8" from fold.
4. Cut elastic to fit comfortably around waistline plus 1/2" for seam
allowance. Overlap elastic ends 1/2" zig zag or box stitch elastic ends
together, forming a circle.
Place the elastic inside the casing, periodically pinning elastic in place.

Use a zipper foot. Position the needle at the right side of the foot. Butt
the foot next to the elastic, sew. While sewing smooth the fabric so it is
flat in the front of the foot allowing it to gather behind the foot. The
elastic will be tightly sandwiched between the two rows of the straight
stitching, producing a professional look.
